Orange and Pink Kitty Meow Skirt for Girls
What is the first creative memory you have?

I suppose that my absolute first creative memory would be playing with my sister when we were little. I don’t remember the specifics of the game, but I do remember enjoying the fun. My first “artistic” memory would be drawing in early elementary school. I loved to draw. I didn’t think I had much talent, but someone did, so I was culled for some special art classes. They were awesome. I remember learning about different painting techniques and working with ceramics and sketching. I loved it all.

What or whom began your creative journey on Etsy?

My son. I’d heard of Etsy and poked around on it and I think I’d even set up a shop (in name, not product) for my costume design stuff. But it wasn’t until I was pregnant with my son that I really thought about doing anything with my Etsy shop, and after he was born, frog loves monkey became my natural focus.

How did you come up with your shop name?

I have a thing for frogs. When my nephew, now six, was little, he signed a lot and, for whatever reason, he always signed “frog” for me instead of my name. (We lived in different states at the time and he had no idea of my frog fascination, so it was kind of funny.) So I was Auntie Frog for a little while. Then, when my son was born, we always seemed to call him Monkey when he was little. So… frog loves monkey. Because nothing has ever been more true.

Describe what creations you have in your shop

My initial tagline for frog loves monkey was “natural, organic, homemade, hand made, fair trade”, with the thought that I would carry a selection of my items and those handmade by others, with all-natural or organic bases. I knew that I wanted to focus on items useful to families - so things for children, parents and their homes. And my past in costume design and construction pretty much guaranteed that we’d be doing clothing. Setting up shop on Etsy meant that I would *not* be selling items made by other people - at least not on that venue - and setting up shop with my mom (which we made official in February of this year) has helped to expand our line more into non-clothing areas. So, we do clothing, primarily for children but for adults as well, all-natural junk-free soaps and body scrubs, baby items like car seat covers and mei tai carriers, Waldorf and Montessori inspired toys like bean bags and play food, quilts and blankets…pretty much anything that we think is cool or useful and fits with the other things that we make. On our dedicated website, we have a little more room to carry things like amber teething necklaces, etc.

Ladybugs & Polka Dots Car Seat Cover
What inspires you?

Everything! Seriously. Sometimes Mom and I get ideas when we’re sitting around playing with the kids. Or a fabric seems to scream out what it wants to become. Or a color combination is really intriguing and I can’t let it rest until I make something that incorporates that color scheme.

What do you listen to or watch while creating?

My kids. I work at home, with a four year old and an almost-two year old. So, while I’m sitting at the sewing machine or cutting table, I’m often called on to play a little bit of Lightening McQueen or find myself singing the theme song to “Phinias & Ferb”. On the odd days that my husband takes the kids off and I get to work all by myself, I’m often tempted to put on some really loud music (and occasionally do), but I generally just sit here in the quiet, listening to the birds and the sewing machine.

Banana bread! I’ve been using this one for years and it’s never failed me.

2 cups flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sugar
1 egg
5 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
3 soft bananas

Mash bananas. In large bowl, combine dry ingredients. Add milk, softened butter and bananas. Still until well mixed.

Pour into greased and floured bread pan and cook at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until done.

Simple, and *super* yummy. And easy to adjust for allergies or preferences. We’ve done different things with flour and it’s always turned out well.

Tribute Tuesday with Roses for Clementine

Please help me welcome Diann and her Etsy shop Roses for Clementine for Tribute Tuesday

One of a kind, romantic flower jewelry and accessories for weddings, special occasions and every day using vintage and repurposed materials. Vintage finds, too...let's discover Diann and her story!

Upcycled T-shirt Brooches
What is your first creative memory?

My first creative memory had to do with lying in bed as a toddler and watching the play of light on the walls....also, covering my brother and me in mud and expecting our mother to be very impressed by our new look. She was not, surprisingly!

What or whom began your creative journey on Etsy?

I only heard about Etsy about two years ago; a few months later my daughter told me she had started a shop called NeedVintageShoes. I was intrigued. The women of our family love vintage shoes and clothing, yard sale treasures, and anything that has a history. I had been painting, but decided to make different types of things that spoke to my love of flowers, history and romance.

How did you come up with your shop name?

RosesForClementine was suggested by my daughter, and inspired by both their names. Clementine seems popular now, but when she was born, the only other one I had heard of was Clementine Churchill, wife of Winston.

Describe what creations you have in your shop

I love to challenge myself with one of a kind items...or else it speaks to my short attention span! Most of the things in my store will not be repeated...I just thrive when I play with materials, imagine and try out new things.

Glitter Clutch Purse

What inspires you?

I am influenced by 18th and 19th century history, and all things beautiful.

What do you listen to or watch while creating?

My husband is a musician, and often I hear his music while I work. Living in the Boston area, there are great sounds everywhere. Saturday mornings I listen to "Backwoods" on the MIT station and on Sundays I listen to my friend Kate, who hosts "Sunday Morning Country" on the BC station. It's not so much that I am a country fan, but these people play wonderful things! I also listen to NPR and Jim & Margery mornings on 96.9fm in Boston. I do have a day job teaching, so I have to get my music/news in measured doses.

I'm not a cook, preferring to make reservations : ) My husband does a lot of the cooking, but when I do make something it is usually French, like a souffle.

Wire Wrapped Tear Dropped Earrings
What is the first creative memory you have?

From my recollection, around the age of 9/10, I took some safety pins and added different colored beads to them and sold them to my mother’s co-workers for $0.25 (small) and $0.50 (large). I thought it was amazing that I could make money on my creativity, and so began of my journey into creativity.

What or whom began your creative journey on Etsy?

While in college, I needed to make earn some additional spending money. I thought what better way to do this, than to expand my jewelry designing business.

How did you come up with your shop name?

It was while I was in college that I actually came up with the name. I solicited input from a friend. With our creative minds we ended up with the name Jewelicide which translates, “jewelry to die for”.

Describe what creations you have in your shop

Bright, affordable, hand crafted gemstone bracelets, earrings and necklaces.

What inspires you?

Listening to music and travelling to different parts of the US and other countries such as Japan, Guam, Amsterdam, are some of my main sources of inspiration. I am also inspired by mom’s beautiful rose garden. These are some of the things that inspire the concept before I actually begin putting my thoughts in sketch or actual design.

Fuschia & Lime Memory Wire Wrapped Bracelet

What do you listen to or watch while creating?

I usually listen to the Radiohead, Tricky, Circa Survive and Sarah McLachlan radio stations on Pandora.

I’m not much of a cook but I do love cocktails. I found a great one on Pinterest a few months ago. It shows you how to make a strawberry basil sangria.

  • ½ lb of fresh strawberries
  • 1 apple
  • 1 ounce of fresh whole basil leaves
  • 1 bottle of Cline Cellar's Cool Climate Chardonnay
  • ½ cup organic sugar
  • 1 cup of club soda
  • 1 cup of white grape juice

  • 1. Trim and thinly slice the strawberries.
    2. Slice and dice the apple into very small bits.
    3. Score the basil leaves with a fork. I did this instead of cutting the leaves into strips as I did not want my guests choking on basil while trying to enjoy this drink. Simply just rub the basil leaves gently with a fork in order to release their flavor in the sangria.
    4. Layer the fruit, sugar and basil in a large pitcher and let sit for about 10 minutes. This is just to let the sugar absorb the juices from the basil and the fruit. You'll see it turn a bit red.
    5. Add the club soda first and then the remaining liquids. Stir well and serve.

Rainbow Baby Mittens & Hat Set
What is your first creative memory?

I would first like to thank Amy for giving not only me, but other shop owners this wonderful opportunity. ~You are very welcome Cheryl...thanks for sharing your creative story with us :)

My first creative memory is one of my earliest memories. My Mother, a very creative woman, introduced crafts to my siblings and me at a very young age. Besides the family Christmas tree, my siblings and I had our own tree, which we decorated ourselves. I remember making ornaments for our tree and for gifts. Glitter. We loved to use glitter on our ornaments and on anything else we could put glitter!

What or whom began your creative journey on Etsy?

My oldest daughter has a shop on Etsy. From the moment she opened her shop, she told me how much fun she was having selling her items and being a part of the Etsy family. That is when I decided to sell crocheted items on Etsy.

How did you come up with your shop name?

Once I decided to focus on baby items, I wanted a baby related name. I thought about a name for weeks. For me a baby represents love and happiness, hence the name, "Bundle Of Joy Shop".

    Baby Booties

Describe what creations you have in your shop

My shop sells baby items that I hand crocheted. Each crocheted item is made from premium yarn. Some of my items are: afghans, booties, diaper covers, sandals, hats and bottle covers. On a regular basis I am adding new items.

    What inspires you?

I am inspiried by my family, especially my Mom. She shows me by example how having many passions in life is a wonderful way to live.

What do you listen to or watch while creating?

That depends on what I am making or my mood. Sometimes I enjoy listening to the top 40, classical rock, the blues and other times I want it quite. I enjoy watching a variety of shows when I am making something. I'll watch a movie, a news show, a comedy and of course the Green Bay Packers!
